Here are some facts you should know about fur: 1. 90% of cage-raised foxes are used in fur-trim. So, don't let anyone tell you that fur-trim on a jacket hood is just left-over scraps. It keeps the fur industry alive. 2. The U.S. produces about 10% of the cage-raised fur in the world. 60 to 75% of the fur in coats sold in the U.S. comes from cage-raised animals. (HSUS 2004) 3. Fur-bearing animals live terrible existences when they are "ranch-raised" on a "fur farm". Cages leave the animals little room for moving around: mink cages are about two and a half feet long, a foot wide, and a foot high; fox cages are about a foot wider and six inches taller. (HSUS 2004) Water is provided by an automated system and food is placed on top of the cage to fall through the wire mesh.
The Animals: 1. The non-breeding animals are killed just after their first winter coat grows in at 7 to 10 months. 2. Breeding animals can live in the above-described cramped environment for six to eight years! 3. An estimated 250,000 chinchillas are killed each year by the international fur industry. 4. Cage-raised minks commonly suffer obsesive-compulsive behaviors like pacing, self-mutilation, and cannibalism.
The Killing: Fur-bearing animals are killed by gassing, neck breaking, anal electrocution, clubbing, trapping and injection with poisons. Anything, not to damage the precious pelt!
